Let me start with something uncomfortable . Fireworks are beautiful . But they are also hazardous. A single mistake can cause injuries, fires, or worse .
I’ve been in event management for over a decade , and I’ve witnessed pyrotechnics executed properly. I’ve also observed them performed catastrophically. The difference is almost always in the preparation .
That’s exactly why I developed this guide. If you’re contracting a planner to manage pyrotechnics, here’s what you must verify . Whether you choose us or a different agency, these items are mandatory.
Why “We Know a Guy” Is Not Acceptable
This is the critical query. Does your company possess a current fireworks permit from JBPM?”
In Malaysia , fireworks are regulated by the Fire Services Act 1988 . Only permitted professionals can acquire, move, and ignite pyrotechnics. The punishment for unpermitted pyrotechnics can involve penalties as high as fifty thousand ringgit and imprisonment.
Request to view the permit. Take a photo of it . Verify the expiry date . If the agency hesitates or makes excuses , walk away immediately .
Your planner should also manage all municipal approvals from the local authority (DBKL for KL, MBPJ for PJ, and so on). This includes police notification and crowd safety approval .
With us, we maintain our permit visible at our https://kollysphere.com/ premises and online. We submit all approvals no later than one month prior to any pyrotechnic display. If we cannot get the permits , we inform the customer right away. We do not proceed illegally .
The Difference Between General Liability and Pyrotechnics Coverage
Standard event insurance does not cover fireworks . Fireworks require specialised pyrotechnics insurance .
Request from your planner: “Do you have specific pyrotechnics liability insurance ?” “What is the coverage amount ?”
A skilled pyrotechnics display should have at least RM5 million in coverage . For large events (over 1,000 guests) , RM10 million or more is standard .

Ask for the insurance certificate . Verify that it explicitly references “pyrotechnics” or “fireworks”. General liability is not enough .
Additionally inquire: “Are your subcontractors (if any) also insured ?” Some planners contract independent pyrotechnics teams. If those independent workers lack coverage, you could be responsible for their errors.
At Kollysphere events , we maintain ten million ringgit in fireworks-dedicated protection. We do not outsource pyrotechnics. Our licensed team fires every show .
How Close Can Guests Get to Fireworks
Pyrotechnics detonate. Hot pieces descend. Guests must be far enough away .
Request from your planner: What is your required exclusion zone for these pyrotechnic types?”
Professional standards suggest:
For small fireworks (up to 75mm shells) : one hundred metres from the firing position.
For moderate pyrotechnics (three to six inches): 200 metres .
For substantial pyrotechnics (six to twelve inches): three hundred metres or greater.
The agency should provide a map indicating the safety perimeter. This diagram should be distributed to the location, safety staff, and local authorities.
What about falling debris ? Ask : “What is your plan for post-show debris removal ?” A professional agency will clear the firing zone following the performance. They will collect unfired shells and cardboard tubes . They will not leave hazardous waste behind .
I once observed a gathering where the planner neglected post-show clearing. Youngsters discovered unfired pyrotechnics the following day. Miraculously, no one was hurt . But that planner was prohibited from every location in the state.
Wind Limits and Lightning Protocols
Malaysia’s weather is unpredictable . Clear skies early evening. Storm by mid-evening.
Ask your agency : “What wind speed cancels the show ?” Expert standards say 30 km/h for small fireworks, 20 km/h for large shells .
“What about rain ?” Minor drizzle may be permissible. Intense storms and electrical activity are complete stoppages.
“Who makes the call ?” The answer should be : “Our pyrotechnics manager, in consultation with the venue and client .” It should not be: We’ll let you decide.” You are not a fireworks expert . You should not make life-safety decisions .
What is the backup plan ? If conditions stop the display, do you receive your money back? Does the planner rearrange without additional fees? Obtain this documented.
With us, we maintain an explicit documented climate procedure. If we cancel for safety reasons , we reschedule at no additional charge . If the customer stops for other concerns (we advise against this), deposits may be forfeited .
Operator Qualifications: Who Is Actually Firing the Fireworks
The permit belongs to the agency. But the actual individual activating the system requires their own credentials.
Request: Who is the primary fireworks operator for our gathering?” What qualification do they possess?”
Locally, approval from JBPM’s Fireworks Training Programme is the basic requirement. Additional credentials from international bodies (like the BPA or the APA) suggest greater skill.
Request information about history. “How many shows has this operator fired ?” Have they ever experienced an incident?” A professional will answer honestly .
At Kollysphere events , our primary fireworks operator has a decade and a half of practice. They have fired over 500 shows . They have no incident history. They recertify annually .
Is the Local Fire Department Aware of Your Fireworks
Here’s something most clients don’t know . Your event agency should notify the local fire department about your fireworks display . This is not voluntary. This is legally required.

Request: “Have you notified the local fire station ?” What did they say?”
A skilled planner will supply the name of the fire officer they spoke with . The date and time of the conversation . The case number if relevant.
Why is this important? Because if a guest calls 999 to report “fire at the event” , the fire brigade needs to understand that it’s an intentional pyrotechnic show. Otherwise, they might send five fire trucks . Otherwise, they might interrupt your event .
With us, we file a formal notification with the local fire station 14 days before any fireworks event . We get a signed acknowledgement . We keep this document with our permits .
Verbal Promises Are Worthless
Pyrotechnics are too hazardous for informal agreements. All details require documentation.
Here are the five clauses that must appear in your pyrotechnics agreement:
Precise position of the firing area (indicated on a diagram). Exclusion zone dimensions and how they will be enforced . Climate stoppage rules and payment/date-change conditions. Evidence of coverage (document appended to the agreement). Post-show cleanup responsibility (who clears debris and when) .
If any of these are missing , do not sign . Ask for an amended contract . If the agency refuses , find another agency .
With us, our pyrotechnics agreement spans multiple pages. It is detailed and specific . Clients sometimes joke that it’s longer than their wedding vows . But no one has ever experienced confusion at the gathering.
The Cost of Cutting Corners
Let me be blunt . If a planner prices you five thousand ringgit for a pyrotechnic display when others are charging fifteen thousand, something is wrong .
Maybe they’re skipping insurance . Perhaps they’re employing unlicensed technicians. Maybe they’re ignoring safety distances . Maybe they’re avoiding permits .
Every corner cut raises danger to your attendees. A serious fireworks accident can cost millions in lawsuits . Can ruin your reputation permanently . Can injure the people you invited to celebrate .
Professional fireworks are not cheap . They require licensed operators, proper insurance, safety distances, and regulatory approvals best corporate event management company Malaysia . These things cost money .
At Kollysphere , we are not the lowest-priced pyrotechnics supplier. We are one of the safest . We have never experienced an incident. We have never harmed an attendee. And we plan to maintain that record.
Looking to include pyrotechnics in your gathering securely? Reach out to us now. We’ll show you our license, insurance, and safety protocols . We’ll explain our climate backup strategy. And we’ll give you a fireworks display that your guests will remember forever – for entirely positive reasons.
